Introduction

GMRS National Club of Greece
GENERAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS SERVICE OF GREECE

Welcome to the official website of the GMRS Club.

GMRS Club is an association whose purpose is to promote the lawful use of radio communications in the UHF frequency bands in the range of 400–470 MHz, as well as in the Citizens Band 26.965–27.855 MHz.

The association is a member of the European Citizens Band Federation (ECBF), which it represents in Greece before state authorities such as the Ministry of Digital Governance, the Ministry of National Defense, and the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT).

The concept of a General Telecommunications Service for Citizens has been widespread for many years in other countries. Examples of similar services exist in the United States and Canada as GMRS, in Australia as UHF CB, in Germany as FreeNet, in Italy as Band 43, and in Japan as Digital CB and Personal Radio, each operating under different regulations and limitations.

For this purpose, we cooperate with the relevant state authorities in order to establish a “Regulation for the Operation of the Hellenic Telecommunications Service for Citizens”, as well as to modernize the existing “Regulation for the Operation of Citizens Band (C.B.) Radio Stations”.

The philosophy behind the General Telecommunications Service for Citizens is to allow every citizen to use portable, mobile, or base radio transceivers in order to cover their communication needs in situations where communication through fixed or mobile telephony networks and the internet is not available.
For example:

  • communication between hiking groups in areas without mobile phone coverage,
  • communication between vehicles during trips or outdoor activities,
  • information about possible hazards on the road,
  • changes in weather conditions or travel routes.

Equally important is the use of base stations to support mobile or portable stations, enabling communication for people with special needs or residents of areas without access to telephone or internet networks.

At the same time, providing telecommunications support during emergency situations is extremely valuable, both for citizens in danger and for public or private organizations involved in civil protection activities.

Until the final “Regulation for the Operation of the Hellenic Telecommunications Service for Citizens” is issued, our association has licensed, through the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT), an almost nationwide radio network of UHF repeaters and simplex frequencies, in order to cover the telecommunications needs of its members and to support public and private organizations.

The association cooperates with numerous rescue, outdoor activity, and other organizations through cooperation agreements. To the members of these organizations it provides:

  • telecommunications support through its radio network,
  • training,
  • technical support.
In cooperation with amateur radio associations, rescue organizations, municipal civil protection services, and the Ministry of Digital Governance, we organize telecommunications support exercises aimed at gaining experience and strengthening cooperation among the participating organizations.

For individuals, the association provides its members with authorization to use the radio network using suitable transceivers for special radio networks, as well as an identification callsign:

  • in the format SWyxxxx for the UHF band,
  • in the format yyGRSxxxx for the 26.965–27.855 MHz band.

The annual membership fee of the association is 50 euros.
With this fee, all members of the family may become members if they wish, namely the father, the mother, and their children up to the age of 18.
If the children continue their studies, the family membership fee of 50 euros covers them for the entire duration of their studies plus one additional year.
For studies lasting more than six years, an extension approval from the Board of Directors of the association is required.
Each family member has the right to use the radio network with the issuance of an individual license card.
